Anina Christine Berthold

Anina Christine Berthold, a beloved daughter, sister, cousin, and aunt, peacefully went to be with her Heavenly Father in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, following a sudden illness.

Anina was born on January 7, 1953, to Elsa and Eberhard Berthold. She was the first daughter born on the Berthold side of the family in 50 years—a distinction that made her arrival especially treasured.

Anina was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the age of eight and was later endowed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she carried a quiet love for the gospel and her Heavenly Father throughout her years.

Music was another great love of Anina’s life. As a young woman, she sang for several years with the Mormon Youth Choir and later with the Mormon Youth Symphony and Chorus. She also shared her love of music throughout her school years, participating in Girls Glee, Junior Choir, and A Cappella Choir at Highland High School, where she graduated in 1971. She attended Rosslyn Heights Elementary and Hillside Junior High.

Anina had a remarkable artistic gift. After winning the Granite Art Show, she was awarded an art scholarship to Utah State University. She created beautiful works of art throughout her life, always finding joy in creating something meaningful and beautiful with her hands.

Anina worked in engineering and later in the Yellow Pages department of the telephone company.

As the oldest of six children, Anina took her role as a big sister seriously—and gracefully. She loved her family deeply and never stopped finding ways to show it. She was the kind of person who remembered the things that mattered to everyone else.

Every Christmas, our family looked forward to receiving a box from Anina filled with goodies for everyone, including the grandchildren. She put so much time, thought, and love into preparing each box. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, accomplishment, or special occasion. Like our mother, she loved celebrating the holidays, but Anina also made sure the people she loved felt celebrated throughout the entire year.

She cheered us all on. She sent funny and adorable GIFs simply to brighten someone’s day. She had a wonderfully childlike nature and an ability to find delight in simple things. She gave generously of herself, often in ways that others may never have fully realized.

Anina lovingly cared for her mother, helping her remain in her own home for as long as possible.

But perhaps what will be remembered most about Anina was her giving heart. Even when she didn’t have much herself, she was always finding ways to give something to someone else. She gave her time, her creativity, her encouragement, her talents, and her love. She never needed much to make someone else feel like they had received something special.

Anina is survived by her siblings and their spouses: Wendy (Roger) Furse, Brian (Cyndi) Berthold, Daniel (Heather) Berthold, David Berthold, and Julie (John) Stevens. She is also survived by her 12 nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly and who held a very special place in her heart. She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Elsa Berthold, and her father, Eberhard Berthold, as well as her brother Michael and sister Stephanie, who both passed away in infancy.

We will miss Anina more than words can express. Her kindness, her creativity, her humor, her music, and her tender love for her family will remain with us.

Although our hearts are broken by her sudden passing, we find comfort in the knowledge that death is not the end. We know that families can be together forever, and we have faith that Anina’s reunion with her beloved mother was beautiful. We look forward with hope to the day when we will see her again.

A private graveside service will be held for immediate family.
