Rodney Jesse Gordon

A loud, beautiful storm of a human has gone quiet. We share the passing of Rodney Jesse Gordon—our raw, honest, chaotic, and deeply loved Rod (Papa Roddy)—the partner in crime and husband to Dennis for 20 wild years.Born January 7, 1966, to Wilda Mary Lowe and Rulon Jesse Gordon, Rod was fueled by a fierce, restless drive to break out of his small town. He put himself through university, collecting multiple degrees and a master’s, always pushing to expand his world. An early mission to Argentina left him with a lifetime love for the culture and fluent, beautiful Spanish. For twenty years, he used that beautiful language to belt out "mi amor," "te amo," and "buenos días" to Dennis, turning their mornings into a routine of pure laughter as Dennis tried his best to echo it back.Rod was entirely unapologetic about who he was—a proud, gay man who rejected traditional molds and lived his truth right out loud. He was wonderfully messy, fiercely emotional, deeply silly, and honest to his very core. He fought hard battles inside his own mind and body, carrying those heavy human demands with a raw vulnerability that made people love him all the more. He was also a deeply talented artist who poured his soul onto canvas, loving nothing more than to paint.He had a boisterous, belting voice that could shake the walls. In their early years, he and Dennis sang in the Salt Lake Men's Chorus, and at home, Rod would spontaneously break into song, pulling Dennis into the music. Together, they were fearless world travelers exploring 83 countries, and making lifetime friendships as they went.When Rod entered Dennis’s life in 2005, he brought a rare, generous love that didn't know how to be jealous. He completely embraced the family history, warmly honoring the memory of Dennis's late wife and the beautiful foundation they had built. Rod became a unique fixture in our lives—a fun, easygoing friend to the adult siblings, and a beloved, true "Papa" to the grandchildren who were lucky enough to grow up closest to his side.Under the white pines of their Sugarhouse home, Rod and Dennis built a literal sanctuary. While Dennis kept their home organized, clean, and beautiful, Rod infused it with an unflappable warmth. He totally embraced the chaos of a big family. When the kids were running everywhere, loud and leaving trails of messes, Rod was right there with them—painting, drawing with sidewalk chalk, and matching their joyful noise. If a glass shattered or a blender broke by accident, he never got mad but simply smiled through it.They threw open their doors to everyone, providing a fierce lifeline, shelter, and unconditional love to young gay men who had been cast out by their own families and were fighting for their will to live. Their house was a vibrant haven of loud piano music, living room dance parties in front of the mirrors, backyard apple picking, and neighborhood walks where the kids stopped to touch and smell every single flower.Rod leaves behind his beloved husband Dennis; his twin brother Randy, his brother Kelly, and his sister Diana; and a massive, grateful extended family. He goes to join his parents and his sister, Lori. Rod lived entirely exposed, sang from his gut, and left a footprint too big to ever be erased.We will gather to celebrate his untamed life at the service detailed below. Services will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Inspired Funeral Home at the Historic City View Memoriam, located at 1001 E. 11th Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah.

A visitation will take place one hour prior to the service, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

Following the service, family and friends are invited to remain for a Celebration of Life and gathering from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
